Wow. Quiet around here. Been almost a month since we had any Babylonian banter.
This used to happen all the time when I blogged by myself, so I guess I’m a little staggered to realize that it’s not all my fault this time.
So I’m going to fill up this awkward pause by saying a few words to the movie industry. You know, the big “MI” who I’m sure are waiting with baited breath to see what I, the generic consumer, have to say today.
Ahem.
Dear Greedy Bastards:
(is that too informal for a business letter? I can never tell.)
Thanks for actually providing a summer movie season full of movies that excite me. The other day I was looking at the listings at my local multiplexus and saying DAMN! Cuz I want to see almost every movie on that list. Seriously.
There’s just one problem. You chose to bring this awesome movie summer into existence at a time in my life when I can hardly manage to get outside the house, since we’ve got a new kid. And I can’t be the only film lover in this position. So you’re missing out on some serious revenue here, I’m betting.
But if you went ahead and figured out some way to get those new movies on my big screen TV, I’m sure I’d leap at the chance! You could probably charge 15 or 20 bucks for the “rental” and I might well pony up for the opportunity to see one of the latest hot titles from the ‘plex without having to worry whether ootsy-bootsy-sweetsie-poo was going to turn into a miniature of the Incredible Hulk in a crowded theater showing the film of the same name. You know damn well that this is technically feasible.
Hell, you could release no-frills DVDs for sale on the day of cinematic release! It wouldn’t cut into your cinema revenue much, and you could still sell extra-packed discs a few months later.
But in this day and age, with the technology being what it is, I propose that you are missing out on a lot of extra cash right up front by not exploring these kinds of options. The fact is that tech-savvy consumers are looking for solutions like this, and if they don’t materialize, eager film fans can always track down a torrent or two.
You want to nip piracy in the bud? Give the people what they want, and make it easy!
Sincerely,
Just another big-nosed netizen
